Blade Runner Writer in Talks for Sequel

Original Blade Runner writer Hampton Fancher is in talks to pen an idea for an untitled sequel to the classic sci-fi film for director Ridley Scott and studio Alcon Entertainment.

Alcon and Scott are mum on plot details but they confirm that the story will be set ?some years after the first film concluded,? according to a statement released Thursday.

Blade Runner, which hit theaters in 1982 starring Harrison Ford, was an adaptation of the Phillip K. Dick story Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Fancher shared screenplay credit with David Peoples.

The movie was a box-office disappointment when it was first released but has since become one of the most important films in the sci-fi genre. Ford played a ?blade runner,? an expert on artificial humans, who is brought in to hunt down several rebellious “replicants.”

Fancher, an actor who appeared on shows such as Gunsmoke, Rawhide and 77 Sunset Strip, wrote fiction on the side. Despite co-writing Blade Runner, his screenwriting career never took off, although he did pen the 1989 crime movie The Mighty Quinn and wrote and directed the 1999 serial killer thriler The Minus Man, which starred Owen Wilson and Sheryl Crow.

Scott is producing with Alcon?s Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove as well as Bud Yorkin and Cynthia Sikes Yorkin.

Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble, who run Thunderbird Films, are executive producing.

Fancher is repped by APA and attorney Matt Saver.

Dominick Cruz has torn ACL, UFC 148 bout with Urijah Faber off

UFC bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz is out of his UFC 148 bout with Urijah Faber. UFC president Dana White announced the bad news via Twitter on Monday afternoon. The exact circumstances of the injury and a timeline for recovery have not been revealed.

Cruz tweeted his disappointment.

“Im bummed people,Thanx 4 the support as i battle this,big sorry to all the fans out there!I WILL recover n I WILL b back 2put on a show!”

Cruz is currently coaching against Faber on “The Ultimate Fighter.”Their July 7 bout was to be a rubber match after Faber won their 2007 bout at featherweight and Cruz took the 2011 bantamweight bout. After facing off as coaches on TUF, the bout was supposed to decide a rivalry that’s been brewing for years.

Their bout was also the original main event for UFC 148 until Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva’s fight was moved to Las Vegas from Brazil. Even without Cruz/Faber, UFC 148 still is poised to be one of the best cards of the year. Sonnen/Silva, Forrest Griffin’s rubber match with Tito Ortiz, and Rich Franklin vs. Cung Le gives the card plenty of star power.

There are those in the general aviation community who think electric planes are the future for private aircraft, but regulatory hurdles are in place preventing them from proliferating in our skies. You see, current FAA requirements for light sport aircraft (LSA) — planes that can be flown by anyone with a pilot’s license — preclude electric powerplants, and that makes such planes unavailable to most private pilots. Well, today at the CAFE Electric Aircraft Symposium, FAA analyst Tom Gunnarson delivered some good news for flying EV advocates, stating that the FAA has completed its regulatory study on electric aircraft, and the rulemaking process will begin soon. Once those rules have been written, electrically-propelled aircraft will be available for use as LSA by the public, which isn’t possible today given their current status as experimental craft. The bad news? Governmental wheels spin slowly, and Gunnarson said that incorporating those new rules into the current regulatory framework will take five years if we’re lucky, but ten years is a more likely time frame for the FAA to finish. In the meantime, you’ll have to settle for air shows or terrestrial transport to get your EV fix.
